NEWS: ILLINOIS CRACKING DOWN ON HOSPITALS THAT BILL RAPE VICTIMS

Last month, Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a new law that cracks down on health care providers that directly bill patients who have been sexually assaulted. I called Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan because she drafted the bill, which was sponsored by state Rep. Michelle Mussman, D-Schaumburg, and state Rep. Melinda Bush, D-Grayslake.
Sarah Layden, director of advocacy services at the Chicago-based nonprofit Rape Victim Advocates, said she knows of instances when women have received hospital bills and then put the unopened envelopes aside because they simply don't want to deal with them. The bills sometimes are sent to collection agencies.
