CHICAGO RAPPER "MARVO" SPEAKS ON LAWSUIT AGAINST LUDACRIS

In June news broke that Chicago rapper MarVo was suing Disturbing Tha Peace co-founder Ludacris over the song “Sex Room” claiming he is one of the original writers of the tune. The track featured Trey Songz and appeared on Luda’s 2010 album Battle of the Sexes. MarVo had remained silent on the lawsuit publicly, but he spoke exclusively with AllHipHop to give his version of events and to reinforce his claim that he deserves credit and compensation for “Sex Room.”
“I want my side of the story to be shared. I never wanted any bad blood,” says MarVo. “I am not looking to prove to you what I did. I’m telling you what I did, and somebody’s being dishonest. Not me per se. Not Luda per se, but somebody is being dishonest.” According to MarVo, he worked with a DTP producer on the track back in 2009, and he wrote the hook that was eventually used for “Sex Room” for a song he was working on. He contends the producer, who according to reports is named Kajun, then gave the track with MarVo’s hook to Ludacris without his permission or knowledge. MarVo says the song was then re-worked with Luda writing his own verses and Songz added to sing his chorus.MarVo also contends that him seeking compensation for his contribution has been ongoing for years. Apparently, conversations about receiving a financial percentage for his part in the creation of “Sex Room” took place before the song was released, but the issue was never resolved. That same year MarVo says his mother passed away, and as a result his attention turned away from the dispute over “Sex Room.” Supposedly, MarVo was not fully aware a lawsuit was ultimately filed in his name. “It hit the surface back in 2009 before the record even came out. Things were silent, because I’m a dope emcee, and I don’t want people to feel like I trying to use Ludacris’ name to gain me some fame,” says MarVo. “Getting information [about the lawsuit] was almost like a shocker to me. I knew what was going on, but it wasn’t even something that I had actually initiated. It was a call made to me like, ‘we did this and this is going into motion’.” MarVo made it a point to clarify that he has no ill feelings towards Ludacris or associates at Disturbing Tha Peace. For him, it is about business and fairness. “I don’t have no beef with anybody, but Ludacris even said, ‘sometimes people write hooks.’ He’s in the industry. Everybody who’s in this industry really understands how it goes. Sometimes a person will write a song. He’ll say, ‘Hey I love that song. Let me buy this song,’ and what’s suppose to happen is everyone who is involved in the process of making that song is supposed to get compensated,” says MarVo.“I don’t condone anyone to get out here and say Luda is a snake, because I don’t personally know Ludacris. I have never met Ludacris in my life. It just happens that I was in communication with people around Luda, so it’s not impossible for him to hear a record composed by myself. However, the person letting him hear that record might not be telling him there’s a kid in Chicago who actually wrote the hook to this record and we gotta take care of him.” There has been backlash in the press against MarVo. Some media outlets have suggested he is just an unproven local rapper looking for a come-up off the success of an established artist. MarVo insists that is not the case and maintains that he has proof in the form of video footage from 2009 of his participation in the making of “Sex Room.” The video is currently being held as evidence in the case. “I do have proof. There’s a video where you can see that MarVo did write the record. We were in the studio filming while we were recording this record, me and the producer,” says MarVo. “This video is going to be the crippling blow. The video puts the situation in my favor, because you have on the video me singing the lyrics to another person.” Marvo claims that being left out of gaining publishing rights to a top five R&B/Hip Hop song like “Sex Room” could have cost him anywhere between $500,000 to $1 million in potential revenue. MarVo has been working in the entertainment business for years making a majority of his money from corporations who license his music for television shows and commercials. His track “Attitude” was recently featured on the “I’m Not Kelly Pitts” episode of BET’s The Game. MarVo also works as a “professional ghostwriter” helping other emcees craft their songs, and he releases his own music like the DJ Head Debiase & Don Cannon hosted Change mixtape, 2011′s “Derrick Rose“ with Yung Berg, and the single “This Ain’t New To Me” featuring Future. After making important connections in the industry that last few years, MarVo feels at this point getting what he calls his proper credit for “Sex Room” is mainly about being properly recognized for his work. “I saw his interview on The Breakfast Club where Luda was like, ‘I’m straight. I’m good.’ Even knowing that this man is good, and he makes all these millions of dollars, from the jump I would have been willingly to sell for a very small amount,” admits MarVo. “At the end of the day this is Ludacris, DTP. They are successful, so Luda having this record and being successful with it would not be detrimental to my career.” No matter how the situation turns out, in MarVo’s eyes he played an important role in a single that was performed by a platinum selling rapper and one of the leading voices in R&B music today.

MAYOR DALEY'S NEW GIRLFRIEND

Crain’s Shia Kapos writes that the former mayor has been dating Rush Medical Center Dr. Adele Joy Cobbs, who specializes in emergency medicine. Sources who were at the George Lucas-Mellody Hobson wedding party, held in June at Promontory Point, said Daley and his date “hit it off after meeting at the gym,” Kapos reported in Crain's. After Daley, 71, was photographed with the much younger woman at the wedding, I asked the former mayor’s longtime spokeswoman, Jackie Heard, to identify the woman who Kapos reported is a 41-year-old doctor. I never heard back. Heard, who ran Daley's press operation at City Hall, is now communications director for Katten Muchin Rosenman, where the former mayor is of counsel. Neither Daley nor Cobbs confirmed their dating status to Crain's. Cobbs couldn't be reached for comment.

NEXT-DOOR NEIGHBORS KILLED HOURS APART

Police said they found the 23-year-old in the alley about 8:50 p.m. Monday. He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:56 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. Just nine hours earlier, it was L'Terrick Benion who had run up the steps of his next-door neighbors' apartment to deliver news to Corey Mays that his son, Cauirece Graham, had been shot two blocks away. Graham, 28, was sitting inside the restaurant about 11:55 a.m. when a gunman walked in and fired about eight shots, hitting Graham repeatedly, according to police and staff at the restaurant. The gunman then got on a bike and rode away, witnesses said. Graham was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 12:40 p.m., officials said. Neighbors said Tuesday a man had walked in the restaurant and asked Graham where he lived. Graham responded "Motown," and the man left. He went to the gas station at West Garfield Boulevard and South Damen Avenue before returning and opening fire, neighbors said. Police had not determined whether the two shootings were related, they said Tuesday. Benion and Graham both belonged to separate factions of the Black P Stones gang, police said.

A PREVIEW OF THIS NEW VISUAL FROM THE HOTTEST NEW ARTIST IN CHICAGO CHANCE THE RAPPER SURFACED A WEEK BACK. THE FULL VERSION IS NOW OUT. ENJOY!

CHICAGO RAP SCENE CONTINUES TO FLOURISH AMIDST WAVES OF VIOLENCE

Human tragedy has always been processed through song and this summer it’s happening most vividly in the city where America’s blues turned electric. In Chicago, a rising generation of young rappers — Lil Durk, Chance the Rapper and countless others — are coming of age amidst an epidemic of gun violence that’s contributed to the murders of 229 people this year and counting. In 2012, Chicago tallied 509 slayings. In 2011, it was 433, with more than 80 percent of those killings reportedly taking place in public spaces, leading some to wonder if Chicago’s youth should be treated for the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. With segments of Chicago resembling veritable war zones, the Windy City has lived up to its brutal new nickname, Chiraq. Chicago’s younger rappers appear to be responding to this engulfing violence by challenging it, ignoring it, grieving it, escaping it, adapting to it, embracing it, exploiting it — sometimes all at once. Every song is different. But ultimately, every song is an implicit declaration of visibility and survival.

4 YEAR OLD KHALISE WEATHERSPOON SHOT

Khalise Weatherspoon was playing outside her Chicago Lawn home early Monday evening when she and a 31-year-old man were shot just before 5 p.m. near 71st and Rockwell. Police say two men suddenly ran out of the alley and started shooting, striking Weatherspoon in the stomach and the adult man in the buttocks, the Sun-Times reports. Weatherspoon was riding a scooter outside the home at the time she was hit, according to ABC Chicago. CBS Chicago reports police have no suspects in custody but said it appears the girl’s family has gang ties, though a relative -- and not Khalise -- was the intended target.

25 NEW RAPPERS TO WATCH OUT FOR

Every year, a new wave of artists wash up in our Twitter mentions, flood our email inboxes, and strike it lucky on YouTube. The measurement of what a "new" artist is, in the age of "FIRST!" has gotten a lot more confusing, of course. By the stringent standards of the internet, yesterday's hype happened literally yesterday—no one is truly ever "new." Never mind becoming a household name—if an artist has an interview up somewhere, he's become "overhyped." With that said, some artists might have made a little noise on the blogs, or gained some regional traction over the last few years, but the way we see it, they're still on the ascent. Similarly, some artists may not have much any attention whatsoever—but given the right look, they could end up becoming stars.

TOP 25 GREATEST HIP HOP A&R'S OF ALL TIME

What the hell is “A&R” anyway? It’s actually an old-timey music business term meaning “Artists & Repertoire,” a relic of a time when artists didn’t write their own material and their “record men” at the label had to pair them with songs and session musicians. In the hip-hop context, the “Artists” part means finding and signing talent to a label; The “Repertoire” part means not only corralling producers and beats, but working with the act on musical and lyrical direction. Some A&R people excel at one of these aspects in particular. You can have great talent scouts who don’t give much input on the finished product; and you have in-house A&R specialists who may not have signed the act but give crucial and timely artistic direction in the creation of an album. This list skews a bit towards the former.

CHICAGO BECOMES LATEST STATE TO ALLOW ONLINE VOTER REGISTRATION

Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn signed a measure into law Saturday that will make Illinois the 18th state to allow voters to register online. Supporters say the move could increase turnout at the polls and cut down on paperwork costs, while critics question the security of an online registration system and say there is a potential for fraud in a state where Chicagoans have been known to vote from beyond the grave.

"LET US LIVE" CHICAGO YOUTH PLEA

More than 200 people joined a South Side pastor Saturday afternoon to march up North Michigan Avenue and stage a "silent sit-in" to help spotlight young people who are disproportionatley affected by violence in Chicago. The "Let Us Live" march, organized by Project HOOD, culminated in a "State of the Hood Address" given by Rev. Corey Brooks of Woodlawn's New Beginnings Church outside the Wrigley Building. Brooks said when a child goes missing in America, the government issues an Amber alert. The pastor said it is time to issue an Amber alert for a generation of black youth. "Today, we are issuing an Amber alert from the hood because our black children are missing," Brooks said. "Missing education, missing employment, missing parents..."

KANYE WEST UNDER INVESTIGATION

When Kanye West rapped, “so go and grab the reporters so I can smash their recorders” on his song “New Slaves” he probably did expect that if he lived out his lyrics he could be facing police charges. Us Weekly is reporting that seems to be the case. Last week footage of Kanye scuffling with a paparazzo at LAX airport made headlines. In the video Kanye can be seen trying to take the photog’s camera after telling him, “what you’re trying to do is get me in trouble, so I step out and have to pay you like $250,000.” According to a statement issued by Los Angeles Airport Police Kanye may have to worry about more than just a financial lawsuit. The Airport Police confirmed that the incident was reported to the LAPD.

DERRICK ROSE SPEAKS ON CHICAGO VIOLENCE

Sheepish but sincere, Derrick Rose diverted his eyes from the CNN interviewer who asked the kid from Englewood why gun crime was so bad in Chicago. As Rose looked away, you wondered whose faces popped into his head while delivering an answer as accurate as his new jump shot. You imagined Rose picturing himself as a lucky little boy on the South Side who grew up poor but protected from all the bullets because of how he played basketball. "It all starts with poverty, people just surviving and people just really trying to get out," Rose told CNN's Pedro Pinto in an important but largely overlooked interview during Rose's recent European marketing tour with Adidas. In a sit-down conversation that lasted only 2 minutes, 25 seconds, Rose offered the most compelling content during recent interviews without even addressing whether he was 100 percent - unless that referred to a commitment to improving his crime-infested hometown.

EVEN WITH THE RISE OF NEW NAMES AND ACTS A YEAR LATER THERE IS STILL ONLY ONE CHICAGO ARTIST KEEPING THE INDUSTRY AND STREETS TALKING. NEW VISUAL AND SONG FROM CHIEF KEEF.

DWAYNE WADES WIFE HOMELESS AND ON THE STREETS

It’s sad to see families break up. But what’s worse is when one party just can’t handle the situation and move on. It’s even harder for NBA athletes, where there are so many people who see you as their meal ticket for life and their only opportunity to live well. The worst cases are when you see complete melt downs, and this might be what we’re witnessing right here. Dwyane Wade has a history of headaches with his ex-wife Siohvaughn Funches. The two got a divorce a few years ago(2007), and since then, things have gone down hill for her. A woman who loses her children is already going to be on edge, but when you compound that with financial problems, there’s no telling what you’re going to get.

CPS LAYOFFS CONTINUE

The Chicago Public School district is slashing more than 2,100 employees, nearly 1,000 of them teachers, in the largest layoff of district employees in recent years. The Chicago Teachers Union announced news of the layoff Thursday evening noting staff cuts include teachers, lunchroom staff, paraprofessionals, janatorial and school support staff. Blaming a ballooning pension obligation that's stressing the already cash-strapped district, CPS confirmed it was laying off 2,113 employees Friday, according to Sun-Times reports. With 1,036 teachers getting pink-slipped, the total accounts for roughly 4 percent of the district's entire teaching staff.

ALLSTATE TO SELL LIFE INSURANCE BUSINESS FOR 600M

Home and auto insurer Allstate Corp. has announced a plan to sell its life insurance business Lincoln Benefit Life Co for $600 million to Resolution Life Holdings. The expected deal follows similar moves by major competitors. AXA SA sold its U.S. life insurance unit to Protective Life Corp in April and Sun Life Financial Inc sold its variable annuity business to Delaware Life Holdings in December. Reuters reported last month that British financial services firm Resolution Group was in the race to buy the Allstate unit for about $500 million to $900 million. The deal will generate cash proceeds of about $785 million, including tax benefits, Northbrook-based Allstate said in a statement on Wednesday.

"What this jury has done is establish a precedent that when you are young and fit a certain profile, you can be committing no crime ... and be killed and someone can claim self-defense ... we had to march to even get a trial and even at trial, when he's exposed over and over again as a liar, he is acquitted."

MARCHERS PLEAD FOR PEACE

"I'm tired of crying," Cowley-Pendleton said Friday, according to ABC Chicago. "I don't have no tears for you, this is not for show, this is my life. This is my life, whether the cameras are on or off, and unfortunately no one is doing anything to protect everyone else's life." Gun violence in Chicago prompted many to speak out in recent days and question whether enough was being done to keep the city's streets safe. Citing the city's "epidemic of violence," U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Ill.) this week called for more federal funding to help target the city's gangs and illegal gun trafficking.
