JESSE JACKSON URGES FOR CHANGES IN COUNTY JAIL BOND PROCESS

In advance of a planned lawsuit against Cook County demanding changes in the way inmates are handled, community groups toured the county jail.
The costs of keeping these residents in jail — such as the 57 pretrial detainees who have been in the jail for more than five years — exceeds the cost of electronically monitoring them at home while they await a hearing by about $70 per day, per individual, Jackson added.
There are currently about 9,200 men and women in Cook County jail, a population Dart said should be closer to 6,000.
