According to the city, over 2 million revelers turned out to Grant Park to take in the Stanley Cup victory rally Friday morning -- markedly more than the number of folks who took part in the 2010 celebration. And the jubilant, occasionally expletive-laden mood was, naturally, not confined to Grant Park nor the parade route itself. More than 500 people arrived at a church here Saturday to grieve for a man who spent his life playing for crowds of only a few dozen. Odin Lloyd, the exuberant semi-pro linebacker from St. Croix who died in one of the worst ways imaginable, was remembered in one of the best ways possible. Lloyd's body was discovered on June 17 in an industrial park near former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez's home in North Attleboro. Police say Lloyd was shot and killed after 3 a.m. that morning. Hernandez has been charged with orchestrating the shooting. He has pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail. The six-time NBA champ was not charged or booked after an altercation with a man in California. Scottie Pippen's claiming he attacked a fan in Malibu this weekend in self-defense ... after the man called him the n-word and then spit at him. Sources close to Pippen tell us, the middle-aged man who got his ass kicked by Pippen outside Nobu Sunday night was a drunk, overly aggressive fan who had been badgering Pippen for attention all evening ... beginning inside Nobu, where Pippen was eating with friends. At one point, we're told one of Pippen's dinner guests went to the bathroom ... and the man sat in the guest's place ... continuing to pester Pippen with questions. We're told Pippen bit his tongue and politely asked the man to leave. After the meal, we're told Pippen agreed to take a photo with the man outside the restaurant ... but the man continued to be aggressive, demanding an autograph as well. Pippen refused and we're told that's when the man dropped the n-bomb, shoved the NBA legend, then spat at him. Sources close to Pippen say he lost it when the spit landed on his young daughter -- and Pippen flew into attack mode. As we reported, the alleged victim was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital with severe injuries to his head, face, and back.
New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was taken from his home in handcuffs Wednesday morning, more than a week after a Boston semi-pro football player was found dead in an industrial park a mile from Hernandez's house. It's unclear why Hernandez was being taken into custody Wednesday before 9 a.m. and put into the back of a police cruiser. He was wearing a white V-neck T-shirt, with his arms inside the shirt and behind his back as he was led from his North Attleborough home. He casually spit into some bushes on his way to the car. Less than two hours later, the Patriots announced on its Twitter account that the team has released Hernandez.

According to early data from Billboard, Kanye’s new album “Yeezus” is set to be #1 on the charts this week, and is projected to move an estimated 340,000 copies in 1st week sales. If the projections hold, this would be Mr. West’s Sixth #1 album. His last solo album, 2010′s “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” debuted at #1 with 496,000 copies sold in its first week according to Nielsen SoundScan. The latest projections are quite impressive, considering that “Yeezus” had no radio singles, artwork, or traditional label promotions to support the new project. Not to mention the fact that Kanye was a little preoccupied with the arrival of his first child with Kim Kardashian, who gave birth to their daughter North West earlier in the week. (link below)

As first posted by City League Hoops, and featured in the video above, Zaire Wade has emerged as one of the nation’s top fifth grade boys basketball players. The younger Wade completely tore apart the competition at the recent John Lucas Future of the Game camp and emerged as one of the most impressive young point guards on offer. Zaire Wade has also shown a knack to take over leadership of his scrimmage squads, an act similar to his father, who now shares those duties with James. (video below)

Lil Reese presented "false documentation" to obtain a 2006 BMW in April, according to police documents. A 44-year-old man, described as the victim in the incident, "never gave consent or permission to register the vehicle in his name," according to the documents. The theft happened in the 6600 block of South Wentworth Avenue, according to court documents. It's unclear what kind of false documentation was presented, or how that led to the rapper obtaining the car. Prosecutors from the State's Attorney's Office did not offer further details on the charge. The South Side rapper was arrested by police on Saturday afternoon in the 10100 block of South Halsted Street in Washington Heights, according to police documents. Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. set bail for Lil Reese at $5,000. On April 13, the same day the car transaction allegedly happened, Lil Reese was arrested and charged with driving without a license and insurance, according to court documents. It is unclear if the incidents are related. (link below) http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20130623/washington-heights/rapper-lil-reese-charged-with-theft#slideshow_modal_slot_1
The Los Angeles Clippers have reached an agreement in principle to send an unprotected 2015 first-round draft pick to the Boston Celtics for the rights to hire coach Doc Rivers, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. Rivers has agreed to a three-year, $21 million deal with the Clippers, league sources said. The NBA still needs to grant approval to the deal, but the teams have been led to believe that won't be a problem, sources said.
Monday, a jogger found the body of Hernandez acquaintance Odin Lloyd, 27, a semi-pro football player, in a nearby industrial park. Police said Lloyd was shot in the head. Hernandez, 23, has not been publicly named a suspect, but ABC News, citing anonymous police sources, has reported that police could try to arrest Hernandez on charges of obstruction of justice. ABC News has reported that Hernandez destroyed his cellphone and video surveillance system and had his home professionally cleaned Monday, the day Lloyd's body was found. In previous interviews and multiple news reports, Hernandez and his family said Hernandez was devastated by the sudden death of his father, Dennis, in January 2006, when Hernandez was 16. Dennis' death, the result of complications from hernia surgery, left Hernandez feeling lost and angry, his mother, Terri, and brother, D.J., told USA TODAY Sports in 2009. Hernandez responded by lashing out at his family, smoking marijuana and spending his free time hanging around with a rough crowd of young men in Bristol. "He would rebel. It was very, very hard, and he was very, very angry. He wasn't the same kid, the way he spoke to me. The shock of losing his dad, there was so much anger," Terri Hernandez told USA TODAY Sports in 2009. An O'Fallon, Ill., toddler was reported dead today after being found inside a car, where he was left for two hours. The 23-month-old boy's father was reportedly loading him into the car to go to the park around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday but became distracted. Temperatures that day were in the 90s. Wayne Hubert, 32, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Police say Hubert put the boy in the car around 2:30 p.m. and went back into the home. The charges say Hubert "consumed alcohol to a level which caused him to pass out on the floor." The boy's mother came home around 5 p.m. and found the child lifeless. (link below) http://www.wgci.com/articles/did-you-see-that-421790/illinois-child-dies-after-being-left-11417780/

Chance the Rapper Is the Next Big Thing from Chicago, the New American Capital of Hip-Hop The 20-year-old rapper (born Chancelor Bennett, to parents who both work for the federal government) says that he was the rare student at the ultracompetitive Jones College Prep who didn’t obsess about his future. A class clown and a loner, he was suspended as a senior after he was caught ditching school and smoking marijuana in a public park. During his 10-day suspension, he holed up inside the free YOUMedia recording studio at the library and made 10 Day, which set him on the path from just another Kanye wannabe to the Next Big Thing out of Chicago. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are certainly in for a new life direction with the birth of their first child -- and that direction seems to be North West. According to reports from TMZ, which were later confirmed by People, the pair have named their baby girl North. Though rumors of the directional name surfaced in March, they were swiftly denied by Kardashian. An inside source confirmed the baby name news to People while TMZ got a hold of the newborn's Cedars-Sinai hospital birth certificate, which allegedly bears the name North West. Still no confirmation from the happy couple.

For 28 Chicago Public Schools on Wednesday, the final bell will ring for the last time — ever. Teachers and students at closing schools like Elihu Yale Elementary School in Englewood told the Sun-Times they anticipate plenty of tears when the final bell rings. “Girls are going to be crying when it’s time to go home,” 13-year-old Kameisha Ashford told the paper. The first round of 28 schools will close for good Wednesday: (link below) http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/19/cps-school-closings-start_n_3466144.html?utm_hp_ref=chicago

Kanye West went magnanimous for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’s promotional push. He created the “G.O.O.D. Friday” campaign and delivered free songs to the fawning masses each week leading up to its November 2010 release. There were fantastic tales of a glorious gathering of Hip Hop luminaries crafting the potential classic in an exclusive Hawaiian hideaway floating all over the internet and a 35-minute short film to accompany the second single, “Runaway.” The George Condo cover art was banned from certain retail stores, something West reportedly intended. It was a crafty, stadium-sized media blitz to accompany the album’s stadium-sized sound. For Yeezus, Yeezy ended up minimalistic. Outside of another memorable Saturday Night Live performance then beaming the confrontational “New Slaves” video on the side of buildings around the world in the same weekend and that grainy clip of Ye’, Executive Producer Rick Rubin and Mike Dean recording “I Am A God” posted to KanyeWest.com last week, the buildup was minor in comparison, albeit haphazardly. There’s still no huge radio single. The album apparently doesn’t even include artwork—just a clear jewel case with a piece of red tape on the right side. Intentional or otherwise, it’s a stripped down campaign mirroring the album’s stripped down sound. Yeezus is audacious, ornery and miles outside of what’s expected from Kanye West, and often what’s conventionally accepted in Hip Hop. Opener “On Sight” is not only the exact opposite of an album highlight, but may also be the crudest track Ye’s yet to release. “Black Timbs all on your couch again / Black dick all in your spouse again / And I know she like chocolate men / She got more niggas off than Cochran,” he kicks over little more than a skeletal cascade of electronic blips and zips. “For my theme song / My leather black jeans on / My ‘By any means’ on / Pardon I’m getting my scream on,” he charges on “Black Skinhead,” a rumbling force that sounds more fitting on a Marilyn Manson release than something synonymous with the makeup of Kanye’s collection. Both teem with passion and aggression, plastering Yeezus with a psuedo 808s & Heartbreak aesthetic—call it 808s & Anger. It’s likely too soon for the populace to cosign Kanye’s “The only rapper compared to Michael [Jackson]” bar on “I Am A God,” but it was initally too soon when Jay-Z brazenly alluded to being better than the Notorious B.I.G. on The Blueprint’s “Hola Hovito” in 2001 (“And if I ain’t better than Big / I’m the closest one”). In the end, the masses sided with Hov. Some statements are too uncomfortably cocky to digest without time and consideration. But West’s “I feel my confidence + someone’s low self-esteem = my arrogance” quote from his motivational booklet, Thank You And You’re Welcome given away for free during his 2008 Glow In The Dark tour comes to mind when gawking at the super-sized super ego he sports like his Yeezy Red October signature sneaker. Everything about this song bluntly broadcasts a bold, possibly off-putting level of self-importance but from a position common in works like Miguel Ruiz’s The Four Agreements, Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist as well 5 Percenter ideology and Scientology. (Yeezy’s neither. Yeezy “just talked to Jesus / He said ‘What up, Yeezus’”). So lines like “I know He the Most High / But I am a close high” would ring pretentious if the track wasn’t so lowkey empowering, falling inline with a strain of enlightenment creeping back into the ethos. Snoop Dogg went Snoop Lion in 2012. People build billion dollar businesses in their bedrooms. Hov just persuaded Samsung to buy a million copies of an album before it dropped, give it away for free, then announced it during the NBA Finals—essentially going platinum before being available. Mankind is making godly leaps at the speed of a right click, even though comments sections World Wide Web wide seem to indicate otherwise. “I Am A God” is awesomely on-point—gratuitous screaming and all. Solid swaths of social commentary align nearly every Kanye West release. Here the Civil Rights references return only now much more inflammatory, pushing the margins to the brink of breach. Which may explain the album’s brevity. At 40 minutes and six seconds, Yeezus is by far his shortest LP (Graduation follows at 51:12 minutes). Gone are the scenic bridges and angelic choirs littered lushly throughout his previous work. This one’s an exercise in minimalism—right down to the minute. That’s fortunate. Anger overkill rarely equals replay value. Precisely when the rage is about to spill into repellent, quintessential Kanye returns. The album’s second half is sonically similar to most anything found on Graduation through My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. It’s interesting to hear Yeezy deride wealthy private prison owners and their Hampton spouses on “New Slaves” then describe how the club is so packed that he “might ride around on [his] bodyguard back like Prince in the club” five tracks later on “Send It Up” (featuring King Louie). He follows that awesome Dave “Chappelle Show” allusion with “She said ‘Can you get my friends in the club?’ / I said ‘Can you get my Benz in the club?’ / If not / Treat your friends like my Benz / Park they ass outside til the evening end / When I go raw I like to leave it in…Yeezus just rose again.” At the Yeezus release party in Los Angeles, California last week, bold orange tape was wrapped around each of the name brand logos on the liquor bottles as if to say that no corporation gets free promotion from Kanye West. Then he kicks enough name brands to question his commitment to a message of counter-consumerism. But Yeezy’s the best since Tupac at etching his disparities in ALL CAPS, unabashedly reveling in confliction. What makes West’s sixth solo album compelling despite its gaggle of haunting shrieks and leftist production is that Kanye manages to remain as entertaining as ever. From mic to plug, the album is supremely Tweetable—loaded with enough incredible quips to start a T-shirt line. “When a real nigga hold you down / You’re supposed to drown,” may be the realest relationship lyric yet heard in 2013 (“Bound 2”). And for such a disconnected first spin, Yeezus becomes increasingly addictive with each additional listen, an indicator of high replay value potential. This captivating level of contextual and sonic tension places the project in art-piece territory, representing a jagged installation added to West's almost all classic solo catalog. A slurred hook from Chief Keef perfectly accentuates “Hold My Liquor’s” (featuring Justin Vernon) sublime depiction of a drunken excursion to an ex-girlfriend’s home in search of reconciliation, for example. “I’m In It”—with its made for club fornication commentary, Reggae inspiration and hilarious “I be speaking Swag-Hili” musings quickly embeds itself Indian-style into the eardrum. And if there’s one song that must be heard immediately, it’s “Blood On The Leaves.” Interpolating elements of Nina Simone’s segregation era ballad, “Strange Fruit” with the bombastic horns from C-Murder’s “Down For My Niggas,” Ye’s emotional exhale on a relationship gone wrong and side chicks trying to purposely get pregnant works in every setting: The gym, the car, the club, the crib. Bravo. Where does an artist move creatively after nine years of trailblazing trendsetting? Kanye West has been at the forefront of Hip Hop and Pop Culture since his 2004 entrance with A College Dropout. His sound, his style and his wardrobe have continuously been repurposed by scores of ball-ticklers throughout his career. Compound that with a high profile relationship with a reality show princess and a perceived knack for dancing in his self-described douchebaggery, and this album has all the trappings of a polarizing offering. Music is especially turnt up these days, so as he bumrushes impeccably on the aforementioned “New Slaves,” Kanye's decided to “tear shit down,“ removing the glossy trimmings, flexing a sense of addition by subtraction. It's easy to love this album and it's easy to hate it. Landing anywhere in between is difficult. Attempts to label this traditional Hip Hop or otherwise are futile—but society is tagged with enough labels already. Yeezus—like Yeezy—is jarring, uncomfortable, uncompromising and courageous—all the things that initially made Hip Hop great.

The leader of a West Side gang, his right-hand man and four other purported high-ranking members of the Black Souls were ordered held without bail Friday following their arrests in a massive roundup under a new state racketeering law. Fifteen of the other 23 suspects facing RICO charges also appeared in court Friday, including Duavon Spears, who allegedly shot West Side resident Claude Snulligan after he went to police to complain about illegal activity on his block in October. Snulligan’s death prompted the Operation .40-Cal probe, authorities said earlier this week as they outlined the charges. Earlier today, Chicago Police arrested Chief Keef as he left the courthouse in Skokie, IL where he was fighting a traffic case. We now know that Keef was arrested on a trespassing charge, and reps from his camp have sent over the following press release, stating the CPD used excessive force during the arrest. CHICAGO POLICE USE EXCESSIVE FORCE ARRESTING CHIEF KEEF Keith Cozart was arrested this afternoon around 12:30 P.M. after leaving traffic court. The 17 year old rap phenom, Chief Keef, road about 4 blocks from the Skokie Courthouse when his vehicle was pulled over. His manager Rovaun “Dro” Manuel was driving when two unmarked cars cut the vehicle off. Present were Chief Keef, Dro, Mike Starkman, and Ballout. Mike Starkman says six officers armed with AK47’s hopped out of the cars to extract a compliant Cozart. Keith Cozart was arrested on charges of misdemeanor trespassing and taken from Skokie back to the south side to be processed. It is not normal practice for police to come from the south side armed with AK47’s to arrest a person on misdemeanor trespassing charges, but clearly Chief Keef is a special young man that garners special treatment from the Chicago Police Department. Hours later, amidst jovial officers with no sense of urgency, Chief Keef is still being held waiting to be processed. So special they just wanted to keep him around for a little while longer.

Chicago Blackhawks players slowly walked to their respective seats at the podiums, the look of fatigue, not surprisingly, still somewhat evident. It’s the byproduct of an extended game the previous night and, in some cases, an unexpectedly brief night’s sleep. With so much expended in Game 1 and so much at stake in Game 2, the rest will certainly benefit both squads. TMZ is reporting that 2 Chainz was robbed in broad daylight in San Francisco, and shot were fired at him. A San Francisco Police Department sergeant told TMZ that cops arrived at the scene after shots were fired just after 4:30 PM. Apparently when the police arrived, 2 Chainz did not want to cooperate with them, instead telling them he could handle it himself. TMZ reports that video surveillance shows that Chainz and fourteen of his people "ran away from the incident" like "cockroaches running from a flashlight." Apparently the Hair Weave Killa told the cops that only his wallet was stolen, and that's all that happened.

The ACLU has a new report out on marijuana arrests and racial disparities among those arrests across the country, and the raw numbers are staggering—especially in Cook County. While it is the second-biggest U.S. county by population, the numbers still have the ability to surprise. The biggest county in the U.S. is Los Angeles County, with a population of almost ten million; Cook County has a bit more than five million people. And Cook County had more than twice as many arrests for marijuana possession, a rate of 91 per day. So far in 2013, Chicago homicides, which outnumbered slayings in the larger cities of New York and Los Angeles last year, are down 34 percent from the same period in 2012. As of Sunday night, 146 people had been killed in Chicago, the nation’s third-largest city — 76 fewer than in the same stretch in 2012 and 16 fewer than in 2011, a year that was among the lowest for homicides during the same period in 50 years. An ambulance was called to the Jackson home in Calabasas in the early hours of Wednesday morning and Michael Jackson's daughter was taken out on a stretcher. TMZ reports that the caller said Paris had overdosed, though another source says she had multiple cuts on her wrists. The 15-year-old tweeted on Tuesday night, "yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away now it looks as though they're here to stay."

Though not receiving the same amount of attention as their crosstown rivals, the White Sox also had a first-round pick in the MLB Draft on Thursday night. With the 17th-overall pick in the draft, the Sox selected Tim Anderson, a 19-year-old shortstop out of East Central Community College in Decatur, Miss. Anderson had a big year in Division II of the NJCAA, being named an All-American after leading the country with a .495 batting average and 62 runs scored. He hit 10 home runs, posted a .563 on-base percentage and slugged .864, while his 41 stolen bases ranked second in the country. The Cubs picked up another building-block piece in Kris Bryant, the University of San Diego third baseman they believe will one day fit right into a lineup with Anthony Rizzo and Starlin Castro. The draft’s No. 2 overall pick. After leading the nation in homers (31), runs scored (80), walks (66) and slugging percentage (.820) this season and posting a 3.34 GPA last year and making the West Coast Conference’s all-academic team. The Cubs have been assigned a $6.7 million value for the No. 2 slot, the bulk of their overall $10.6 million bonus pool. It sounds like the 20-year-old doesn’t have anything left to prove on the college level. (link below) http://www.csnchicago.com/cubs-talk/cubs-believe-bryant-will-be-ready-impact
Blackhawks did have to battle, of course. Kings defenseman Slava Voynov, who’s had a tremendous postseason, was at it again early, scoring his sixth goal of the postseason for an early lead. But the Blackhawks’ own postseason star, Bickell, had the equalizer about 10 minutes later, a wrister that Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick should’ve had, but just got a piece of. Dustin Penner reestablished the Kings’ lead about two minutes into the second, but Kane scored, batting a Bickell shot through, with 1:39 remaining in the second. Banks’ lawyer, Sam Adam Jr., filed a memorandum asking for a signature bond, stating that Banks is engaged, has one child and another that is due on Tuesday. He said Banks has signed with a major record label but has yet to make a significant amount of money and therefore has little means to post bond. Attached to the memorandum are handwritten statements from several alleged witnesses to the incident, all claiming that Banks did not own the gun. One of the statements is from a 20-year-old man who claimed it was his gun, and that he told police he was the one who threw it in the car. The man, who is a convicted felon acquitted of attempted murder in March, claimed in his statement that “police did not want to listen to him." DNAInfo is reporting that Lil Durk was arrested earlier this morning after being caught by police with a loaded handgun. The 20-year-old rapper, whose real name is Durk D. Banks, was picked up at about 3 a.m. in the 7200 block of South Green Street, police said. Lil Durk was standing near a car when police rolled up to investigate a call of a man with a gun. As police arrived, Lil Durk was spotted tossing a gun into the car, a source said. Police recovered the gun — a loaded .40-caliber — and arrested the rapper without incident, the source said. Lil Durk, who has a suburban Melrose Park address, was charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and is expected in bond court on Thursday. It is his second offense, police said.

Chicago artist King Louie issued a warning to Glory Boyz Entertainment member BallOut following a scuffle that occurred during the “Windy City Drift Tour” concert performance in Davenport, IA. Chief Keef’s GBE camp came to blows with King Louie’s Man Up Band Up crew during Lil’ Durk’s “Dis Ain’t What You Want” performance. During the fight, BallOut was relieved of the same Jesus piece chain he stole from SODGM front man Soulja Boy. The piece of jewelery then ended up in the hands of Davenport man Cameron Oliver. Oliver took to Facebook to say he has Soulja Boy’s chain. “No Play Play We Here… Contact Soulja Boy Tell em We got his shit….” he wrote.
