SPORTS: JIMMY BUTLER SI.COM MIDSEASON REPORT

Butler, 25, first arrived on the NBA scene as a designated shadow, following the opposition's star wings wherever they went. But this year he has taken over the spotlight, averaging 20.4 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists, all career highs, to become the favorite for Most Improved Player. NBA fans recognized Butler's progress on nearly a half-million All-Star ballots—votes of confidence, so to speak—ranking the former defensive specialist among the 25 most popular players in the league.

NEWS: "HELD FOR HOURS" INFO ON CHICAGO'S SECRET POLICE ABUSE CHAMBERS

The US Department of Justice and embattled mayor Rahm Emanuel are under mounting pressure to investigate allegations of what one politician called “CIA or Gestapo tactics” at a secretive Chicago police facility exposed by the Guardian.
Politicians and civil-rights groups across the US expressed shock upon hearing descriptions of off-the-books interrogation at Homan Square, the Chicago warehouse that multiple lawyers and one shackled-up protester likened to a US counter-terrorist black site in a Guardian investigation published this week.
As a second person came forward to the Guardian detailing her own story of being “held hostage” inside Homan Square without access to an attorney or an official public record of her detention by Chicago police, officials and activists said the allegations merited further inquiry and risked aggravating wounds over community policing and race that have reached as high as the White House.
Caught in the swirl of questions around the complex – still active on Wednesday – was Emanuel, the former chief of staff to Barack Obama who is suddenly facing a mayoral runoff election after failing to win a majority in a contest that has seen debate over police tactics take a central role. Emanuel’s office refused multiple requests for comment from the Guardian on Wednesday, referring a reporter to an unspecific denial from the Chicago police.

NEWS: SUN-TIMES REPORTERS EARN THE GEORGE POLK AWARDS IN JOURNALISM

Three Chicago Sun-Times reporters have been awarded one of the nation’s top honors in journalism for stories that led to the conviction of a nephew of former Mayor Richard M. Daley in a decade-old killing.
The George Polk Awards in Journalism announced Sunday that its 2014 prize for the nation’s best local reporting will go to reporters Tim Novak, Chris Fusco and Carol Marin.
The award recognizes four years of reporting on the 2004 death of 21-year-old David Koschman of Mount Prospect that “sparked the successful prosecution of a 10-year-old Chicago homicide” in which authorities were “reluctant to charge its well-connected perpetrator.”

NEWS: NBC'S MOST POPULAR ANCHOR BRIAN WILLIAMS SUSPENDED WITHOUT PAY

Brian Williams, anchor and managing editor of "NBC Nightly News," has been suspended without pay for six months following his continued misrepresentation of events surrounding his coverage of the Iraq War, NBC said Tuesday night.
"We have decided today to suspend Brian Williams as managing editor and anchor of NBC Nightly News for six months," NBC News president Deborah Turness said in a memo to staff sent to FoxNews.com. "The suspension will be without pay and is effective immediately. We let Brian know of our decision earlier today. Lester Holt will continue to substitute anchor the NBC Nightly News."
"Brian misrepresented events which occurred while he was covering the Iraq War in 2003," she said. "It then became clear that on other occasions Brian had done the same while telling that story in other venues. This was wrong and completely inappropriate for someone in Brian's position."

POLITICS:THE FINAL FIVE MAYORAL CONTENDERS SQUARE OFF

The mayor and his four challengers met in their final debate before the election Tuesday at the DuSable Museum.
Fioretti accused Emanuel of running TV ads that had been "repudiated by the very groups you aim to help" and instead "say that you've screwed them."
Garcia lashed out at what he called a tax increment financing system "on steroids" that has served to benefit Emanuel, other politicians "and their cronies."
Willie Wilson touted his desire to make changes to the Chicago Police Department, including having them regularly ride public transportation, to try to reduce the city's crime problems without hiring new officers.
William "Dock" Walls contended he was the "go-to guy" in the administration of the city's first African-American mayor, Harold Washington.
Emanuel did speak to an issue raised in the Tribune investigation that showed how the mayor has used his influence in Washington, D.C., to boost his campaign fundraising.

SPORTS: LITTLE LEAGUE REVIEWING CHAMPIONSHIP WON BY JACKIE ROBINSON WEST

Little League Baseball is meeting to review facts surrounding the eligibility of the Chicago-based team that won the 2014 U.S. championship, amid allegations that the much-celebrated squad may have violated a rule prohibiting the use of players who live outside the geographic area that the team represents.
Stephen Keener, CEO of Little League Baseball, told ESPN that the findings of a recent review of the matter are complete and being evaluated. He declined to say whether Jackie Robinson West, the first all-African-American team to win the championship, could be stripped of its title, as one of its rivals has called for.
update.....
After months of staying mum while cheating allegations circled U.S. champs Jackie Robinson West, Little League International has finally taken action and stripped the Chicago-based team of its title.
Jackie Robinson West, an all-black team that became a feel-good story of the summer and was celebrated from the White House to the World Series, had been in a vortex of allegations since its season ended. Chief among them: the team used ringers from outside its area, then it illegally manipulated district boundaries to its own advantage.
