ALDERMAN EDWARD BURKE WANTS TO BAN HORSE DRAWN CARRIAGE RIDES IN CHICAGO

City officials laid out an animal protection agenda Wednesday as a veteran alderman introduced a measure that would make horse-drawn carriages toting tourists and clogging downtown traffic a thing of the past and an ordinance to require dogs or cats sold in city pet stores to come from shelters gained momentum.
Southwest Side Ald. Edward Burke said he was spurred to propose banning horse carriages at least in part by New York Mayor Bill de Blasio’s vow to end the carriage rides in Central Park. “They’re a nuisance, they’re a traffic hazard, it’s cruel to the animals, and we should be able to beat New York City to the punch,” said Burke, 14th.
