GOV. QUINN DEFENDS $98 MILLION GRANT TO CHARTER SCHOOL GROUP

Gov. Pat Quinn today defended giving a $98 million state grant to the United Neighborhood Organization to build charter schools, a day after he froze what's left of the money over concerns the group hired contractors related to a top UNO executive. Quinn’s administration temporarily froze the remaining $14 million of the grant Thursday after the Chicago Sun-Times reported that UNO had hired two contractors to work on school construction projects who are brothers of Miguel d'Escoto, the group's former senior vice president of operations. D'Escoto resigned from UNO this year. He previously served as a city transportation commissioner under Daley.
