10 CHICAGO PRODUCERS WORTH SHOPPING WITH
STOP WASTING YOUR MONEY. TO BE AWARE IS TO BE ALIVE.
Do
Attend beat battles.
The best way to meet up and coming producers is to attend local beat battles. It’s a great way to see who’s hot and who’s not, and furthermore, beat battle producers are hungrier than most, and are more willing to work with talented artists that don’t necessarily have a budget.
Don’t
Expect anything for free just because you’re talented.
I had this problem for a little while — my life has been easier since I dropped this way of thinking.
Do
Be prepared to sign a contract with producers.
Outline all of your intentions and expectations of the producer for two reasons: the first reason is so that the producer will take you more serious. The second is so that you won’t hear a beat you purchased on any and every up and comer’s project. Trust me, I know several people that do this. You will be ready to fight, but without a contract there’s legally nothing that you can do.
Don’t
If you are privileged enough to get free beats from a producer, don’t tell your other rapper friends that the producer you get free beats from is willing to work for free.
IF someone is giving you free merch, they are helping you with the notion that you will help them, and by help them I mean help them make money.
Do
Make sure the producer gets his or her credit.
Why else would they give you a cheap or free beat? You will destroy your relationship not giving a producer their proper credit.
Don’t
Wait until a producer starts getting notoriety before you decide you want to work with them.
