NEWS: CHICAGO CITY COUNCIL APPROVES $720 MILLION BUDGET

Before the 36-14 vote on the funding for his budget, Emanuel called the city’s finances “a dark cloud” that has been eroding the confidence of Chicagoans.

Emanuel’s lower-the-boom budget will be funded in part by more than $720 million in new taxes, fines and fees.

The $543 million property tax increase for police and fire pensions is the largest in Chicago history. It will be phased in over four years, with the largest chunk — $318 million — tacked on to property tax bills payable in August 2016. That hike will be followed by successive increases of $109 million payable in 2017, $53 million payable in 2018 and $63 million tacked on to the property tax bill due in 2019.

A separate $45 million property tax increase will fund school construction.

NEWS: AMERICAN WRITERS MUSEUM GETS HOME IN CHICAGO

The American Writers Museum, set to open in Chicago in early 2017, announced on Tuesday that it would be leasing a location on North Michigan Avenue, the city’s premier shopping strip, a short walk from attractions like Millennium Park and the Art Institute of Chicago.

The institution has raised more than $3.3 million toward its planned startup costs of $10 million, according to Publishers Weekly. Nike Whitcomb, the museum’s executive director, told the magazine that it expected to draw some 120,000 visitors annually and net $1.75 million in revenue by 2021.

President Barack Obama, perhaps the most famous Bulls fan in the world, is expected to be in attendance for Chicago's season-opening game Tuesday against the Cavaliers.

Obama is flying into Chicago on Tuesday to deliver a speech at the annual conference for the International Association of Chiefs of Police at McCormick Place, where he is expected to lobby for stricter gun control in the U.S.

NEWS: MICHAEL JORDAN STORE OFFICIALLY OPEN IN CHICAGO

By 2020, Nike intends to double sales in the Jordan Brand division to $4.5 billion.

The store, which is located at 32 South State St., contains multiple levels with products dedicated entirely to Nike's Jordan brand.

Fans packed the store, purchasing as many shoes as they can get their hands on.

"I love the store, it's decorated nicely, it's a great experience. I got to see a lot of the shoes that are not out yet," said John Taylor, who has waited in line since Tuesday.

"It's definitely a crazy experience, they have a great variety of sneakers, I'm definitely coming back around," said Devon Dale, a shopper.

A survey conducted by a statewide charter-school group finds that only 30 percent of Chicago Public School students attend their local neighborhood high school.

According to the survey, 70 percent of CPS students opt out of their designated neighborhood high school. Of those students, 38 percent attend selective-enrollment schools, 30 percent choose charter schools, 9 percent attend other citywide non-selective schools and 23 percent attend another neighborhood high school outside their local area.

SPORTS: JOAKIM NOAH TO COME OFF THE BENCH THIS YEAR FOR BULLS

After a seven-game exhibition run that saw him barely make more than a quarter of his shots, it appears that Joakim Noah will come off the bench for the Chicago Bulls to start the season. Second-year forward Nikola Mirotic will slide into the power forward slot occupied last season by Noah, who struggled both at that position and at center, which features Pau Gasol as the current starter.
