McDONALD'S TRYING OUT BUILD YOUR OWN BURGER
Crain's Chicago Business reported recently that McDonald's, the Oakbrook, IL., based fast food behemoth, is testing out a build-your-own burger option in certain markets. No word on when the "pay our employees a living wage" market test will begin.
A month-long build-your-own burger test recently ended at a McDonald's restaurant in southwest suburban Romeoville. A similar test, where customers use an iPad to select toppings, is underway in Laguna Niguel, Calif., according to the Orange County Register. Those burgers cost $5.79 (a buck more for bacon), about a dollar more than what a Big Mac costs in downtown Chicago, making it the most expensive item on the menu. While Oak Brook-based McDonald's said it's too early to tell whether the DIY idea would be replicated at any other restaurants, the company does want to learn if customers are open to the idea that's already a hit at competitors such as Five Guys of Lorton, Va., and Chicago-based Epic Burger.

JURY AWARDS APPLE 290 MILLION IN RETRIAL AGAINST SAMSUNG
A U.S. jury awarded Apple Inc about $290 million in a damages retrial against Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, restoring a large chunk of a historic verdict the iPhone maker won last year.
After a week long trial, the jury deliberated for nearly two days before reaching a decision on Thursday in a San Jose, California federal court. Apple had requested $379.8 million, while Samsung argued that it should have to pay $52.7 million.
Apple and Samsung have been fighting in the courts for over two years. Apple was awarded over $1 billion last year after it convinced a jury that Samsung copied various iPhone features - like using fingers to pinch and zoom on the screen - along with design touches like the phone's flat, black glass screen.

DERRICK ROSE INJURES RIGHT KNEE
Rose, who sat out last season following surgery on his left knee, will have an MRI in Los Angeles on Saturday.
"He was in pain and felt like he couldn't push off his right knee," Chicago coach Tom Thibodeau said.
Rose was on crutches in the trainer's room but was not made available to the media after the Bulls squandered a 21-point lead in their second consecutive loss.
The three-time All-Star led Chicago with 20 points, five rebounds and three assists, but was helped off the court with 3:20 remaining in the third.

18 PLACES TO GO IN CHICAGO TO FEEL INSPIRED
Even in a city as jam-packed with architectural gems and cultural meccas as Chicago, when we're wrapped up in the day-to-day hustle it's easy to speed past all that when we're too busy scanning through our Facebook feeds for the fifth time in the same hour.
Chicago ranks among the three most stressed-out cities in the U.S. and that sort of added stress -- especially if it becomes chronic -- has been found to play a role in health problems including asthma, depression, diabetes and even cancer and heart attacks.
So finding opportunities to unplug whenever possible is key.
Luckily, the city is home to a sprawling array of stunning museums, parks, conservatories and other landmarks that surround us with the space we need to recharge.

HELP FUND THE ROGER EBERT DOCUMENTARY
Roger Ebert’s death earlier this year was felt not only in Chicago, but in the film community all around the world. Whether you loved him or loathed him, it’s hard to argue against how influential Ebert was for film criticism and journalism. I’ve shared my thoughts on how Ebert personally impacted me previously, but now, people can truly show support for the iconic film critic.
Life Itself, named after Ebert’s memoir of the same name, is a documentary about Ebert’s life that attempts to show Ebert not as the film icon he was known for, but as the fully-realized person that he was outside of his status. Director Steve James (Hoop Dreams, The Interrupters) is handling the documentary with famed director Martin Scorsese (The Departed, The Wolf of Wall Street) serving as executive producer. James began production four months before Ebert’s untimely death, gathering interviews from colleagues and filmmakers as well.
GAY MARRIAGE BILL SIGNED
Wednesday, Illinois became the 16th state to legalize same-sex marriage.
To underscore the fight for equality, Quinn signed the bill on a desk Abraham Lincoln once used to write an inaugural address.
During the ceremony, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel took the microphone and at one point appeared to briefly choke up. “There is no straight or gay marriage. From now on there is only marriage in Illinois,” Emanuel said.

BULLS HAND PACERS 1ST LOST OF THE SEASON
The Bulls (5-3) have four of them in a row, this latest version spurred by 50.6 percent shooting overall that produced as much as a 33-point lead en route to a season-high for scoring. They shot 11 of 19 from 3-point range while also eviscerating the Pacers for 46 points in the paint.
They put seven players in double figures, led by 23 points from Luol Deng. And, of more than minor note, there was Rose, back from a hamstring-related one-game absence to hit a career-high-tying six 3-pointers for his first 20-point night of the season.

CLIFF ALEXANDER COMMITS TO KANSAS
Alexander chose the Jayhawks over Illinois, DePaul and Memphis. Alexander, a 6-foot-9 big man from Curie (Ill.), is ranked No. 3 in the 247Sports Composite for the class of 2014. He is as college-ready as anyone in the country, and his strength and build will enable him to be a dominant force next season in the Big 12. Alexander is an extremely strong rebounder, and his 260-lb. frame gives him the edge in most battles on the boards. He's very tough and has a good motor. Michigan State was the heavy favorite early on, and the Spartans still seemed to be the leader prior to the AAU season. Kentucky made its play and moved to the forefront – before falling back rather quickly. Late in the summer, it appeared Kansas and Illinois were the ones with momentum, but DePaul and Memphis also had their moments in the sun for Alexander.
JAHLIL OKAFOR COMMITS TO DUKE
Mike Krzyzewski has not had to count on his hometown as a recruiting base over the years, but he has been successful with those he’s deemed worthy of a Duke uniform. Young center Jahlil Okafor fits the bill. Okafor, the consensus No. 1 prospect in the nation, chose Duke on Friday afternoon before a live ESPNU audience during a press conference at Young. As expected, Okafor will team with Apple Valley, Minn., point guard Tyus Jones at Duke. Okafor and Jones repeatedly said they would attend college together over the past year.
The 6-foot-11 Okafor was a first-team All-State pick by the Tribune last season after a brilliant junior year during which he averaged 20.9 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.9 blocked shots while leading Young to the Public League championship.

FORMER NIU STANDOUT AND CHICAGO BEAR SAM HURD SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS
Former Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears wide receiver Sam Hurd saw his career come to an end in December of 2011 after he was arrested for attempting to purchase a large amount of coke. Hurd was slapped with a 15-year prison sentence Wednesday (Nov. 13) evening, although his legal team is looking to fight back with an appeal.
Hurd, 28, was arrested in Chicago trying to purchase and distribute a kilo of powder, along with a large amount of kush. Initially pleading not guilty, Hurd violated his bond agreement twice in 2012 after testing positive for kush.
Speaking to an undercover agent after an investigation was launched in the summer of his arrest, Hurd unwittingly admitted to already moving narcotics in the Chicago area.
At the time of his arrest, Hurd was in the last year of a three-year $5 million contract, and Judge Solis expressed disappointment at the player, who was then playing with the Chicago Bears. "You had everything going for you," Solis told Hurd, adding that he thought the case was a "tragedy."

POLICE FIND SMALL ARSENAL OF GUNS IN NIU DORM
A Northern Illinois University student is under arrest.
Kevin Ouwenga, 29, was taken into custody after police found guns and body armor in his dorm at New Hall West.
Investigators say a school worker was sorting mail at the residence hall, that's when she found a package carrying gun parts. The package was addressed to Ouwenga. After searching his room, NIU police found an unassembled AR-15 rifle, a handgun, and ammo.
Ouwenga does have a FOID card. Still, he's charged with unlawful possession of a stored weapon and could receive up to five years in prison. NIU says no guns are allowed on campus.

NEW BILLIONAIRES LIST HAS 21 FROM CHICAGO
A new report puts the number of local billionaires at 21, placing Chicago among the top 20 cities worldwide for the super rich.
However, Chicago's total is only good enough for 13th place in the world. The global leader, New York, has more than four times the number of billionaires, with 96.
Hong Kong (75 billionaires), Moscow (74), London (67), Mumbai (30) round out the top five list of cities, according to the Wealth-X and UBS Billionaire Census 2013.

CHIEF KEEF HEADED TO CALIFORNIA REHAB
Chicago rapper Chief Keef got permission from a Cook County judge Friday to enter a private drug treatment facility out of state after the rapper tested positive for marijuana, officials said.
Keef, whose real name is Keith Cozart, was in court again at the Skokie courthouse on Friday to ask Judge Earl Hoffenberg for permission to enter the drug treatment facility in California, said officials. Cozart will be going to one of the Promises Treatment Centers a high-cost, for-profit treatment program that has housed celebrities such as Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears. Promises has facilities in Malibu and West Los Angeles and has been the target of high-profile lawsuits and criticisms of its methods.

DERRICK ROSE CAN NOW WEAR PROTECTIVE KINESIO TAPE
Via ESPN:
…the NBA reversed course later Wednesday and will allow its use on an “experimental basis.”
“After a discussion today with Jerry Stackhouse, representing the union, we have decided to allow Kinesio tape on an experimental basis so that we can take a fresh look at the possible benefits it might bring to our players,” NBA spokesman Tim Frank said in a statement on Wednesday. Rose injured his neck during the team’s regular-season opener against the Miami Heat on Oct. 29, and has been dealing with neck soreness since. He has been wearing the tape, which is visible on both sides of his neck, since Thursday’s game against the New York Knicks to keep his neck loose. “I think the NBA told me I got to stop,” Rose said before Wednesday morning’s shootaround. “So I probably won’t be able to wear it tonight.” Rose didn’t wear it against the the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday night.

Renteria has extensive experience working with young players, having served eight seasons as a manager in the Marlins’ and Padres’ farm system.
Renteria also is bilingual, which will help in communicating more directly with several Cubs prospects, namely Starlin Castro, Junior Lake and Javier Baez.

SUPER SOAKER CREATOR AWARDED 73 MILLION
The Atlanta-based company behind the Super Soaker water gun and Nerf toy guns has been awarded nearly $73 million in royalties from toymaker Hasbro Inc., according to the law firm King & Spalding. Johnson Research and Development Co. and founder Lonnie Johnson have been in a royalty dispute with Hasbro since February, when the company filed a claim against the giant toy company. According to King & Spalding, which along with the A. Leigh Baier P.C. law firm represented Johnson, Hasbro underpaid royalties for the Nerf line toys from 2007 to 2012. “In the arbitration we got everything we asked for,” said Atlanta attorney Leigh Baier. “The arbitrator ruled totally in Lonnie’s favor.” The attorney also said Johnson “is very pleased” with the outcome.

KANYE WEST "YEEZUS" TOUR POSTPONED
A few days ago in Vancouver one of the trucks carrying The Yeezus Tour equipment was in a crash and damaged a custom-made video truss as well as a 60-ft circular LED screen beyond repair. Ye says the gear is central to staging of the Yeezus tour and central to the creative vision put for by Kanye himself. Because of this, it would be impossible to move forward with the show and The Yeezus Tour will be postponed until the essential pieces can be fixed.
