ANOTHER TEENAGE ASPIRING RAPPER KILLED IN CHICAGO

Leonard "L'A Capone" Anderson, an up-and-coming rapper and friend of Def Jam Recording's Lil Durk, was shot and killed Thursday evening leaving a South Shore recording studio, his mother said. The 17-year-old rapper was walking through an alley near 70th Street and Stony Island Avenue around 6:25 p.m. when shots rang out and he was hit in his right thigh and lower back, said Amina Greer, a Chicago Police Department spokeswoman.

CHICAGO HOBOS STREET GANG INDICTED

Nine members of a violent street gang known as the Hobos were charged today in a federal racketeering case that involves narcotics trafficking, robberies and murders, including the 2006 slaying of a federal informant in the case. The five-count indictment returned by a federal grand jury alleges five murders, solicitation of a sixth murder, four attempted murders, three robberies and the operation of “drug spots” and “drug lines” on the city’s South Side among a pattern of criminal activity between 2004 and 2009

“Law enforcement has identified the Hobos as a tight-knit, violent crew that originated in the former Robert Taylor Homes and banded together from factions of the much larger Gangster Disciples and Black Disciples street gangs,” prosecutors said in a news release. “They allegedly targeted drug dealers and high-value targets to rob and relied upon each other to protect their drug territory, retaliate against rival gangs, and prevent witnesses from cooperating with law enforcement.”

BMI REPORTS RECORD ANNUAL COLLECTIONS IN 74 YEAR HISTORY

BMI reported its highest collections in the year, taking in $944 for the year ended June 30, 2013. That represented a 5% increase over the nearly $899 million collected in the prior year. Moreover, the company paid out royalty distributions of $814 million to its publishers affiliates, songwriters and composers, which represented an 8.5% increase over the $750 million paid out in the prior year. In a statement, BMI noted that the results represented both its largest revenue collection and royalty distribution ever in the company's 74-year history.

DERRICK ROSE "ALL IN FOR CHICAGO"

This commercial takes on an appropriately different tone from the ones that proceeded it. Instead of a buzzing United Center and bro hugs with his brother Reggie, we find an isolated D. Rose standing in a dark room asking himself a series of existential questions.

MYSPACE FAILING AGAIN

Remember way back in the era of dial-up and phones that didn’t have apps when the internet was like a new thing? Youtube was Ebaumsworld, and if you needed a question answered you would have to Ask Jeeves. Oh and of course, before Facebook, Vine, Instagram and Twitter, there was only one social media platform; Myspace.

While the commercial, which packs some of musics biggest names and promising up-and-comers in, is only a few months old, it feels like it was years ago. The premise was noble: revamp the site using a few of music’s new faces - Chance The Rapper, Mac Miller, Riff Raff - as the poster children to get a new, younger audience in. Unfortunately it is just too little too late. Take Chance The Rapper, who is one of the more prominent, new Myspacers. On Myspace, Chance has about 4,400 people “connected to” (AKA following) him. That number is dwarfed by his 194,000 Twitter followers and on Facebook he has 57,000 likes.

It’s seems like Myspace just doesn’t have anything original to make it marketable. Now, you need some hook or edge that another site can not give you. Look at Vine, no other site lets you upload videos like Vine and, with an original concept, they linked it to other social media and have become a new force. The new Myspace isn’t new, it's a sloppy rehash of Twitter and Facebook with no edge. What made Myspace great a decade ago was the fact that there was no other website like it, but now, thanks to its innovation there are bigger, more powerful sites just like it; the teacher became the student.

COMMON CALLS ON HIP HOP TO STOP CHICAGO VIOLENCE

Hip Hop artist and actor Common is speaking out against the overwhelming violence that has consumed his hometown of Chicago. Speaking with the Associated Press, Common suggests that a “peace summit” with fellow Chi-town rapper Chief Keef is a necessary first step to curb the violent crimes happening in the city. Chief Keef has become one of the public faces to the Chicago violence in the mainstream press because of the references to gun violence in his music and his several run-ins with the law. Common makes the points that rap music is not the root cause of the violence, but the music does impact the minds of young people.

“To decide to take someone’s life, I don’t think they let a rap song determine that,” said Common, but then adds that the youth are “influenced by that energy and take it the wrong way.”

Most of his political battles foretell his fights as mayor. It's pretty obvious that Emanuel concluded early in his career that since progressives were probably going to vote for Democrats no matter what, he really didn't have to pay any attention to them. And he didn't, as he cut deal after deal with the right.

Chicago is key to a business moving tons of drugs for billions of dollars. Here’s how the whole operation works.

Drug enforcement experts estimate, conservatively, that the cartel’s annual revenues exceed $3 billion: more than those of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange Group. In Chicago, the cartel has a near monopoly. “I’d say 70 to 80 percent of the narcotics here are controlled by Sinaloa and Chapo Guzmán,” says Jack Riley, director of the DEA’s Chicago office. “Virtually all of our major investigations at some point lead back to other investigations tied to Sinaloa.” In August 2009, five months after Zambada’s capture, a federal grand jury in Chicago indicted him and 45 others tied to a Sinaloa-led drug ring in the city. Patrick Fitzgerald, the U.S. attorney at the time, called the indictments “the most significant drug importation conspiracies ever charged in Chicago,” claiming that the cartel imported and distributed nearly $6 billion worth of illegal narcotics mostly to the Chicago area between 1990 and 2008.

MAN FINDS 1 MILLION DOLLAR LOTTERY TICKET

Here's some motivation to clean out the inside of your car every now and again. When a west suburban Chicago man discovered a forgotten lottery ticket he purchased on the Fourth of July in his car's glove compartment two weeks ago, he took it in to have it scanned at a gas station. Shortly thereafter, Giuseppe Anelli, of Addison, Ill., learned he had won $1 million. Anelli, who purchased the ticket at a Citgo at 1740 W. Army Trail Rd. in Addison, plans to use the money to pay off the house he and his wife own and to invest toward college for their three children, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The Addison gas station also received a bonus -- of $10,000 -- for selling the ticket, according to My Suburban Life.

EX FAMU PLAYER JONATHAN FERRELL KILLED BY POLICE

Police shot and killed a 24-year-old man who ran toward them in what they believed to be a threatening manner. The man was actually unarmed, and seeking medical help after being in a car accident. Three officers responded to a breaking and entering call in Charlotte, North Carolina on Saturday. A woman had called 911 to report a man who wouldn’t leave her front porch and kept knocking on the door. When the officers arrived, the man ran toward them. One of the officers fired a stun gun “unsuccessfully,” according to CNN. It was then that officer Randall Kerrick shot and killed the approaching man, Jonathan Ferrell.

Ferrell was 24 and a former football player at Florida A&M University. Police found a wrecked car nearby, indicating that he may have been trying to get help. "It was a pretty serious accident," Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Rodney Monroe told CNN affiliate WSOC. The crash was so severe that authorities now believe Ferrell had to climb out of the back window, affiliate WBTV reported. He ran to the closest house for help. The woman inside thought it was her husband. "To her surprise, it was an individual that she did not know or recognize," Monroe told WBTV. "She immediately closed the door, hit her panic alarm, called 911."

(BREAKING NEWS) SHOOTING AT US NAVY YARD

According to NBC, 12 people have been shot (eight wounded and four dead) and the gunman has been taken down.

A gunman opened fire Monday at a Navy facility in Washington, wounding at least seven people, authorities said. SWAT officers swarmed the facility, the headquarters of the Naval Sea Systems Command at the Washington Navy Yard. Authorities were trying to assess the casualties in the chaos that followed, but one source told NBC News that at least four people had been killed and eight wounded, and that the shooter was also wounded. A naval security guard was among those shot and was hit in both legs, U.S. military officials said. Washington city police told WRC, the NBC affiliate in Washington, that one of their officers was also among those shot. It was not clear how many of the others shot were civilian and how many were military.

About 3,000 people work in the Navy building, the Navy said. They were ordered to stay in place. WRC video showed a medical helicopter lifting someone off a roof. The Naval Sea Systems Command builds, buys and maintains ships and submarines and their combat systems. The Navy Yard is along the Anacostia River in Washington, near the headquarters of the Department of Transportation and the Washington Nationals baseball stadium.

Chance The Rapper isn’t a full-blown star yet, but he’s well on his way, and we’re willing to bet that he soon will be. He first hit the scene with his mixtape 10 Day in 2012, and while it garnered considerable buzz (enough to get him on our list of 10 Chicago Rappers To Watch For before it even dropped) it wasn’t enough to make him pop off on rap blogs. 10 Day did set the stage for his second tape, this year’s excellent Acid Rap—a mixtape so good that we named it the second best album of 2013 so far, second only to Kanye West’s Yeezus. Not only was Acid Rapcritically praised, it launched Chance’s career in a major way, sparking interest from just about every major label.

We know a star when we see one, and as with Kid Cudi and A$AP Rocky before him, Chance shows all the signs. So we decided to take a chance on Chance and give him the first major magazine cover of his budding career. We sent staff writer (and fellow Chicago native) David Drake on the road with Chance as he toured the country in a used RV.

George Zimmerman, the man who shot and killed unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin during an altercation in Florida almost two years ago, has been placed in police custody for reportedly threatening his wife with a firearm. Central Florida’s WKMG News reports that Zimmerman was apprehended on Monday after police were dispatched to a Lake Mary, FL home to respond to a call involving an alleged threat. The Associated Press says that home belongs to Zimmerman’s father-in-law, and authorities were told that the former neighborhood watch volunteer threatened her with a gun. Speaking to CNN, police said Zimmerman was in “investigative custody” following the incident. Lake Mary police spokesman Zach Hudson told WKMG that officers are "trying to determine what exactly happened,” but preliminary reports suggest law enforcement apprehended Zimmerman after being called to investigate an altercation between two people. The network says the incident involved a threat and a gun, but failed to elaborate further. The news comes only days after Shellie Zimmerman filed for divorce, and less than two months after a jury acquitted her husband of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges brought by officials after the February 2012 death of Martin.

CHICAGO DRILL MUSIC ARTIST SPEAK ON ITS CULTURE

If you want an accurate portrait of Chicago’s modern gang culture, look no further than its "drill music" scene. YouTube is littered with hundreds, if not thousands, of videos with young men and women rapping about violence, representing their sets, smoking high-grade weed, and acquiring “foreign” or imported designer clothing and cars. Drill was primarily a local phenomenon until Chief Keef, then a 16-year-old man-child with an extensive rap sheet including charges of aggravated assault with a firearm on a police officer, marauded onto the national scene with his 2012 drill anthem “I Don’t Like.” The song was remixed by Kanye West and Keef eventually signed a three album deal that could pay more than six million dollars over three years with Interscope Records.

Here, they catch up with King L (formerly King Louie), fresh off the only rap appearance on West’s latest offering Yeezus, Katie Got Bandz, the first lady of drill whose name has graced Rolling Stone and Billboard, and Azae Productions, arguably the most prolific video director to emerge from the scene.

DEMOCRATS ON EDGE WITH SYRIA STRIKE TALKS

President Barack Obama's pursuit of a military strike in Syria has put congressional Democrats and party leaders around the country in a tough spot. They face loud opposition from war-weary constituents at home and are wary of being pulled into another foreign conflict. But they also are confronted with grim images from Syria of gassed children and the pleas of a president from their own political party to consider the consequences of inaction. Breaking from Democrats' long history of being the party typically opposed to military conflict, Obama is pushing for a limited military strike in Syria in response to President Bashar Assad's alleged use of chemical weapons.

NEW CHEMICALS POP UP IN LAKE MICHIGAN'S WATERS

First it was quagga mussels and all those invasive species. Then a hefty coating of tiny plastics. And, now prescription drugs are the newest unpleasant thing to pop up in Lake Michigan's waters. A new study conducted in the lake two miles out from Milwaukee’s sewage outfalls looked for 54 chemicals used in drugs and personal care products in water and sediment. A stunning half of them were found sloshing around at detectable levels, putting into question long-held assumptions that the Great Lakes were diluting the compounds.

This video of phenom Duke freshman Jabari Parker might actually do a decent job of getting you ready for the season. It's got some platitudes and slow-mo shots of Parker walking about, taking jumpers, etc., but at this point -- the slowest dip of the college basketball offseason -- just about anything will get me jonesing for college ball. Parker's had a quiet offseason. His arrival to Durham didn't come with the hoopla that Andrew Wiggins descent into Lawrence, Kan., did. But lest you forget, before Wiggins reclassified to be a 2013 graduate, it was Parker who was No. 1 in his class; who was put on the cover of Sports Illustrated and deemed the Best Player Since LeBron. A lot of that hype, nationally, has faded since, but Parker remains a near-consensus top-10 2014 draft pick as of now. CLEVELAND KIDNAPPER FOUND DEAD IN CELL

Convicted kidnapper and rapist Ariel Castro was found dead on Tuesday evening, 19 Action News reported. He was 53. On Aug. 1, Castro was sentenced to life plus 1,000 years in prison for kidnapping and raping Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus, and holding them captive in his Cleveland home for more than a decade. He pleaded guilty to 937 counts, including murder and kidnapping, in exchange for the death penalty being taken off the table, CNN reported. During the sentencing, Castro denied being abusive and insisted that most of the sex was consensual. 'I'm not a violent person," Castro said. "I simply kept them there without them being able to leave." The three women disappeared separately between 2002 and 2004. They escaped on May 6, when one of the women broke part of a door and yelled to neighbors for help. Castro was arrested that same night. According to JoEllen Smith of the Ohio Department of Corrections, Castro was found hanging in his prison cell at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, Ohio, around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday. Although prison medical staff performed lifesaving measures, he was later pronounced dead at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. At the time of his death, Castro was isolated from other inmates for his own protection.
